FUNDAL is dedicated to people with deafblindness and multiple disabilities who have often been deprived of the opportunity to develop to their full potential and take their place as active members of society. FUNDAL is recognized nationally and internationally as a training center.
Through their educational Centers in Guatemala, Quetzaltenango, and Huehuetenango, and the support program for the interior of the country, students and their families are oriented in learning activities that, without sight and hearing, would seem impossible to perform; using touch and the rest of their senses to create communication tools that allow them to reach their full potential and independence.
In 1996, a world-changing dream was born in the heart of a Guatemalan family when they met and adopted Alex, a 4-year-old boy who could not see, hear, or speak: He was a child with deafblindness. Despite his limitations, he was a happy boy who adapted very well to his new family of five siblings.
His parents sought the help of medical specialists, but his visual and hearing loss was not recoverable due to Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). The most difficult and painful thing for the family was not being able to communicate with him. So full of love for their son, they were given the task of researching how to educate him.
In Guatemala, deafblindness was unknown. Their extensive research led them to the Hilton Perkins program at the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts who supports educational projects for children with deafblindness. The school connected them with other parents and professionals in Latin America, providing support, guidance, and training. Alex's mother was dedicated to implementing everything she learned. Little by little, Alex learned to mobilize, eat alone, to know when it was time to sleep, go to the bathroom, and sign to communicate.
As Alex's parents witnessed these little miracles in their son and whole family, they knew it was important to share what they had learned with other parents. So, in December 1997, with a group of friends and collaborators, and with the professional support of the Hilton Perkins program, “The Guatemalan Foundation for Children with Deafblindness Alex - FUNDAL” was born. In March 1998 they opened the doors of their first center specializing in education for children with deafblindness. The Educational Center started with two students and now has reached more than 400 families in their three locations: in the capital city, Quetzaltenango, Huehuetenango; and in support programs for related institutions and communities in different parts of the Republic.
